Personal Protective Equipment is "any equipment intended to be worn or held by the worker for his protection against one or more risks likely to threaten his safety or health at work, as well as any complement or accessory intended for that purpose".

PPE represents the worker's third line of defence against the risk of accident, and PPE must be used when the existing risks cannot be avoided or sufficiently limited, firstly by preventive measures, methods or processes inherent to the organisation of work, and secondly by technical means of collective protection.

In addition to a prior study, which should involve workers in choosing the PPE most appropriate to the task to be performed, workers who have the need to use PPE should be made aware to:

-Use the protective equipment properly;
-Be aware of when PPE is necessary;
-Know what type of protective equipment is needed;
-Understand the limitations of PPE in protecting workers from injury;
-Put on, adjust, don and remove PPE properly;
-Maintain protective equipment properly;

PPE is a useful tool, but it should be well studied so that its action is effectively preventive and not harmful to the worker when he uses it, either by endangering his condition, or by not allowing him to perform his task efficiently and comfortably.
